A Delicate Balance series explores the relationship between architecture and the natural world. Castles and fortified communities of fantasy and medieval influence coexist with and in nature. Incorporating natural elements such as stone, water, trees, and light into the architecture of the structures, there is interaction and synchronisation with the natural world.
This piece was drawn by hand using Micron 0.5mm pens and is the second in A Delicate Balance series. Completing the arduous task of drawing The Treehouse, which was created with little planning or sketching, I took some time and slowly planned this piece. The shape of the castle was to mimicked the negative space between the cities on opposing cliffs of the Treehouse and act as a complimentary composition. After much research into European castles, cathedrals, and manors I began a rough sketch of the whole structure and then would go into an area, which I started at the bas and worked my way up. I would refine the sketch and add buildings in sections and then ink that section and repeat the process. In total this took close to one hundred and fifty hours and is the longest to date I have spend on one artwork.
